How foot reflexology works against Migraines

If you suffer from migraines, you know there is no way to describe stabbing pains shooting through your eyes, flashing auras so bright nausea ensues, vise-grip like pain that radiates through your head down to your shoulders, pain that leaves you cranky, crabby and locked in a dark room.

  • In the U.S., more than 37 million people suffer from migraines.

  • More then 4 million people experience chronic daily migraines – with at least 15 migraine days per month[1]

  • Migraines statistically affect 1 and 4 women.

  • 3.7 million school age children have also been diagnosed with migraines.

  • A child who has one parent with migraine has a 50% chance of inheriting it, and if both parents have migraine, the chances rise to 75%.[2]

Reflexology for Children

I used to experience debilitating migraines. Tested all the latest and greatest migraine medication, documented every morsel that went into my mouth to establish triggers, prepared for pressure changes in the weather and yet it was still not enough. In fact, I had to move within 15 minutes of any work place as that was the window of opportunity I had to get home so that I would not endanger anyone or myself while driving.

Fortunately, I learned to bring my body back into balance with reflexology so that migraines and headaches are a thing of the past.

Reflexology can aid in bringing the body back into alignment through relaxation and tension release.

Reflexology is performed by using soothing strokes with the hands over the feet to induce relaxation and then using the fingers or thumbs in a walking motion over specific areas in a set routine, which stimulates the corresponding areas of the body, promoting the elimination of toxins and clearing blockages in the flow of energy.[4]

Understand the scientific evidence supporting reflexology. Many clinical studies have observed the positive impact that reflexology has on the body. Reflexology has been shown to make a positive contribution to the following:

  • Improvement of symptoms (such as improved kidney functioning)

  • Relaxation for patients (such as reduced anxiety and lowered blood pressure)

  • Reduction in pain (such as osteoarthritis pain and pain from kidney stones)

  • In one study, about two-thirds of patients reported significant migraine relief after undergoing three months of reflexology treatments. Nineteen percent of these patients stopped taking headache medication altogether.

  • Reflexology has also been shown to reduce symptoms associated with cancer treatments, diabetes, post-operative symptoms, and many other medical conditions. [5]
